What does the HL error code mean?
Hi there,
Thanks so much for getting in touch — and I'm really sorry you're seeing the HL error code. I know how frustrating it is when you just want to hop in your spa and relax, so let's get this sorted for you.
The good news is the HL code is usually very fixable, and we've recently refined the steps below to clear it as reliably as possible. The most common cause is the spa being switched off at the socket while it's still heating — so one handy tip for the future: always turn the heating off first and let it settle before switching off at the plug. It makes a real difference.
Here's the step-by-step to clear the code. It's worth following it through fully, as the resting time is the key part:
1. Turn the heater off. Press the heater button to switch it off, then leave the spa for around 10 minutes. During this time the heater clears any water inside it — you'll know it's finished when it goes completely silent.
2. Remove the filters. Unscrew the filter(s) — newer spas have two, older ones have one — and take out the hair guards.
3. Clean and refit the hair guards. Give the hair guards a quick clean, pop them back in, but leave the filters themselves off for now.
4. Let it rest for 24 hours. This part is important — please give it the full 24 hours, as this is what allows the system to fully reset.
5. Power back up. Plug the spa back in, turn it on, and press the RESET button on the RCD.
Now, depending on what happens next:
If the HL code has cleared (no code showing):
- Run the spa on Filter Only (no heating) for 1 hour
- Then refit the filters
- You're good to go — start heating your spa 👍
If the HL code is still showing:
- Press and hold the Filter button until the filter starts running (you may need to try this a few times)
- The HL code will keep flashing while this happens — that's completely normal, don't worry
- Leave it running to clear for up to 1 hour
- Then refit the filters and leave the filter running for a further 30 minutes
- You can now start heating your spa
That should do the trick for you. But if the HL code is still there after all of that, please don't worry — we'll step in and help you get it fully resolved. To let us look into it quickly, it would be a big help if you could send over:
- Your proof of purchase or order reference number
- A photo of the batch code on your spa (bottom-right of the warning/safety panel — e.g. "07 24")
- A photo showing the whole spa
- A photo of the controller with the HL code displayed
- A photo of the power outlet the spa is plugged into
- A photo of both filter areas
And honestly, even if the troubleshooting works perfectly, if you happen to have those photos handy it's worth sending them anyway — it means we can help you much faster if anything crops up later.
Thanks so much for your patience — we'll get you back to enjoying your spa as quickly as we can. Just give us a shout if anything is unclear at any step.
